Château Dassault celebrate his 70th anniversary

There are Bordeaux stories that owe as much to intuition as they do to destiny. The story of Château Dassault in Saint-Émilion is a perfect illustration. Seventy years after its acquisition, the estate still embodies the elegance of a bold wager, born from the meeting of industry and viticulture.

In the 1950s, Marcel Dassault, one of the leading figures of the French aerospace industry, travelled throughout the Bordeaux region alongside his clients. Each factory visit was invariably followed by the same desire: to discover a great wine estate. He soon understood that wine, beyond the pleasure it offers, is a language in itself—an art of hospitality. He needed a château. Legend has it that he visited one without even stepping inside. A glance at the vineyards, an instinctive appreciation of the terroir, and the decision was made on the spot. It was a gesture characteristic of the industrialist: swift, confident, and almost visionary.

Seventy years later, the estate stands as a firmly rooted part of Saint-Émilion’s heritage. Driven by an unwavering commitment to excellence, it has gradually established itself among the appellation’s Grands Crus Classés. Here, fidelity to the terroir is far more than a slogan: it is reflected in the meticulous care devoted to the vineyard, the balance of its clay-limestone soils, and the expression of Merlot, the signature grape variety of Bordeaux’s Right Bank.

This pursuit is evident in recent vintages, particularly 2019 and 2023, which mark important milestones in the estate’s stylistic evolution. The wines have gained in precision and depth while embracing a freshness and purity that subtly redefine the classic character of Saint-Émilion.

Since 2022, Château Dassault has entered a new chapter with the inauguration of a state-of-the-art winery. Designed as a tool entirely dedicated to serving the fruit, it enables a more parcel-specific understanding of the vineyard and a remarkably refined approach to winemaking. “Celebrating these 70 years means affirming continuity: continuing to refine our wines with precision while never losing sight of what truly matters,” says Valérie Befve, Managing Director.

Today, the estate celebrates its 70th anniversary with a well-earned sense of confidence and serenity. Recent vintages reflect a renewed style: greater depth, finely balanced freshness, and aromatic purity that restores Saint-Émilion’s clarity and expressiveness. The fruit shines through with remarkable definition, textures have become more precise, and oak ageing takes a step back to allow the wine itself to speak.

The highlight of this anniversary is a limited-edition magnum of the 2023 vintage, sealing the encounter between wine and art. Adorned with an original label created by a contemporary artist, it embodies this spirit of renewal: a dialogue between heritage and modernity, where the creative gesture extends that of the vine.
