Château Dassault 2022 : the revival of Saint-Emilion’s Northern slope

There is a kind of climatic irony gradually reshaping the hierarchy of Bordeaux terroirs. For a long time, the northern slope of Saint-Émilion was perceived as a more austere counterpart, less sun-drenched than its neighbors on the plateau or the southern foothills. Yet, within the grammar of contemporary vintages shaped by global warming, this exposure has become a cardinal virtue. Château Dassault 2022 perfectly illustrates this shift: where a scorching year might have produced overly jammy wines, the estate’s geography acted as a natural thermal regulator, preserving a freshness that has become the ultimate luxury on the Right Bank.

Across its 40 hectares, 32 of which are under vine, the soil composition—a complex weave of ancient sands and clays over a limestone bedrock—helped temper the intensity of the 2022 summer. Merlot, the dominant grape variety here at 76%, was able to ripen without scorching, supported by the vegetal structure of Cabernet Franc (20%) and the density of Cabernet Sauvignon (4%). But the interpretation of this vintage does not stop at viticulture; it extends into ageing choices that reflect a quiet yet decisive stylistic evolution within the Dassault Wine Estates.

While the ageing process remains largely classical, with 16 months spent 60% in new oak barrels, the introduction of 10% amphorae signals a desire to open up the flavor profile. Amphorae, through their porosity and aromatic neutrality, preserve the original texture of the fruit, allowing the wine to breathe without masking it with excessive vanilla or toasty notes. This dialogue between new oak and terracotta shapes a distinctive profile for a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé: a wine with substance that embraces its power while refusing heaviness.

On tasting, this approach translates into what might be described as a “finely chiseled” tannic structure. The nose, complex, opens with black fruit and spices, quickly evolving toward notes of blond tobacco—a hallmark of fully achieved ripeness. On the palate, the velvety roundness does not overwhelm; it supports, carried by the preserved acidity of the northern slope. Château Dassault 2022 is not merely a great wine for ageing; it is proof that technical precision, when it listens to the land, can transform a climatic constraint into a stylistic asset.
